Intimacy-focused couples session vs traditional couples portraits

An intimacy-focused couples session photographs how the two of you feel together. A traditional portrait session photographs how the two of you look together. Both are valid. They just answer different questions.

Intimacy-focused couples session: A photographer who is also a certified sexologist and life coach

My take

I've photographed 1000s of women and couples since 2017, and I'll tell you what I tell every consult. If you want matching sweaters by a lake, book that photographer, they're great at it. If you want to remember what it feels like to want each other, that's where I come in.

My studio is a place where walls and shame get ripped to shreds and people finally fucking see the power underneath. A place to be seen, on purpose.

Learn more about the difference in my guide to boudoir vs erotica photography, or see how couples sessions work on the erotica photography page.

What actually happens in a private couples session

Every session moves through three stages, Explore, Experiment and Experience, across about 3 to 5 hours for the whole experience. Here's the real play by play.

Book a consult. Pick a time at go.theboudoirstudio.com/appointment. Tell Brii what you want, what scares you and what you're hoping to feel. Nobody gets judged for the answers.

Explore. You talk through what you two want to remember, what's off limits and what you've never said out loud. This is where boundaries get set. Nothing happens that you haven't agreed to.

Experiment. Pick from the client closet (XS to 6X), set the music and the mood, then try small things first. A slow breath. A hand on a jaw. Forehead to forehead.

Experience. This is the part couples describe as "I forgot she was there." Brii directs the touch, the pace and the eye contact until the two of you stop acting like you're being photographed.

See each other. You leave with images of how you actually look at each other. Most couples say that's the part they didn't see coming.

What it is, and what it isn't

It is a private, guided experience with one photographer who happens to be a certified sexologist. It is also built around what you two choose. Some couples keep it soft and romantic. Others want heat. Brii meets you where you are and nudges you one step past it.

Why couples book an intimacy session (the real reasons)

Couples usually book because something got quiet, and they miss it. Nobody has to be in crisis. Most people reading this are somewhere between "I'm fine" and "I miss you."

Here are the reasons I hear in consults over and over:

You're roommates with a really nice kitchen. You love each other. You just can't remember the last time you looked at each other on purpose.

One of you stopped feeling wanted, and the other doesn't know how to say it.

Your body changed (kids, age, illness, life) and you've been hiding it from the one person who isn't looking away.

A milestone is coming and a card feels too small. Anniversary, wedding, a new chapter, a first or fifteenth year together.

You want to remember who you were before everything got scheduled.

You're curious. You want something fun and a little filthy to do together that doesn't involve a screen.

And the thing I most want you to hear: you don't have to fix anything first. You don't need to lose 15 lbs, fight less or get braver. Come exactly as you are. I don't shoot the highlight reel. I shoot the real thing.

What couples tell me they feel

Seen. Chosen. A little nervous, then suddenly not. Hungry in a way they thought they'd lost. That's not me making them feel it. That's what was already there, finally with room to breathe.

Revelation, not reinvention. I don't make you into somebody else. I show you who you two already are when nobody's watching.

Quick check: is an intimacy session right for you two?

If you tick 3 or more of these, an intimacy-focused session is probably your move. Tick them off together, out loud, and notice which ones make one of you laugh.

☐ I want photos that show how it feels between me and my partner, not just how it looks

☐ I'd rather be touched and guided than told to "smile"

☐ I miss the way my partner and I used to look at each other

☐ I'm nervous about my body and want to see it differently, or my partner is

☐ A milestone is coming and a card feels too small

☐ I want to surprise my partner with something unforgettable

☐ I'm curious about a little heat, a little tension, a lot of trust

☐ I want the photos to stay private, just between me and my partner

If you landed on 0 to 2, no pressure. Come back when something shifts, or read how boudoir and erotica sessions differ first.

5 conversation starters before you book

Nobody has to have perfect answers. Just say them out loud over dinner or in the car.

When did you last feel really wanted by me?

What's one thing about my body you love that I probably don't believe?

What do you want to remember about this year together?

What would make a session feel safe for you? What would make it feel fun?

What's one word you'd want these photos to say about you and me?

Bring your answers to the consult. I'll build the day around them.

Privacy, consent and comfort

The room has exactly three people in it: you, your partner and Brii. The studio is run by one person, with no assistants and no team, so nobody else is standing around watching you take your clothes off.

Here's how comfort and consent work:

Adults only (18+). Sessions are for adult couples.

Boundaries come first. You talk through limits at the consult and again at the start of the session. Nothing happens that you haven't agreed to.

Either of you can say stop, slow down or switch it up at any point. No explanation needed.

Nobody needs experience. You don't have to be comfortable in front of a camera. That's what the guidance is for.

Questions about privacy, image storage and sharing get answered at your consult. Ask every one of them. I want you to book with zero guessing.

If one of you is nervous and the other is excited, that's the most normal combination I see. I'll meet the nervous one first.

What to wear and how to prep

You don't need to buy anything. The client closet runs XS to 6X, so you can choose what fits and what makes you feel hot. Lingerie shopping sucks. Showing up to a closet that actually has your size doesn't.

Before the session

☐ Book a consult and say out loud what you're hoping for

☐ Each of you picks one word for how you want to feel (confident, wanted, playful, soft)

☐ Tell me about any body parts you're nervous about, so I can shoot them with care

☐ Bring something that's personal to the two of you, like a robe, a shirt or a song

☐ Eat something real and drink water

☐ Skip the tight socks and bra lines if you can, so your skin looks like skin

The day of

Arrive relaxed, not perfect. Messy hair is fine. Showing up scared is fine.

Wear loose, comfy clothes in, so nothing leaves marks on your skin.

Come hungry for each other, not just for pictures.

Come as the people who haven't figured their sh!t out yet. That's the entire dress code.

How much does a private couples session cost?

Payment plans are available for up to 12 months at 0% interest, so you don't need the full amount on day one. A retainer of $450 holds an erotica session date. Here's the rest, plain and honest.

The Digital Experience: $2,500 package + $1,000 erotica upgrade for couples = $3,500 total

The Favorite: $3,450 package + $750 erotica upgrade (25% off) = $4,200 total

The Insatiable: $4,250 package + $500 erotica upgrade (50% off) = $4,750 total

Spread over 12 months at 0% interest, those totals work out to roughly $290 to $400 a month before the retainer.

Videography add-on: $600

Micro Boudoir ($650): the smallest package, but the erotica upgrade isn't available with it

À La Carte: starts at $1,299, ask at your consult how couples work with it

Pricing changes, so confirm the current numbers at your consult at go.theboudoirstudio.com/appointment.

The honest money talk

I don't hide cost. I'd rather tell you the number and a way to afford it than watch you ghost me over a surprise. If the number makes your stomach drop, tell me. I'll help you find what works, whether that's a payment plan, a different package or waiting until the timing's right.

Getting to the studio from Boone, Blowing Rock, Jefferson and West Jefferson

The studio is in Crumpler, NC 28617, in northeastern Ashe County, a scenic mountain drive from Boone. Crumpler sits at about 2,559 feet of elevation on the North Fork of the New River, and NC Highway 16 is its main road (Wikipedia).

From Boone: It's about 35 minutes each way (check your map app for live traffic).

From Blowing Rock, Banner Elk and the rest of the High Country: add the miles to Boone, then follow the same route.

From Jefferson and West Jefferson: you're the closest. Crumpler is in the same county.

Plan the whole day

Mountain roads and weather change fast, especially in winter. Check road conditions before you leave and give yourself extra time so you arrive relaxed, not rattled.

Make it a date. Plan a meal you love afterward in West Jefferson, which locals call "the Coolest Corner of NC." Driving in from farther away? Turn it into an overnight. Ask at your consult and I'll help you plan the day around it.
